Ohio State University

The Rural Finance Program at The Ohio State University (OSU) is a recognized world leader in the analysis of rural financial markets and other finance and development questions, particularly those concerning the design and implementation of financial reform programs, the establishment of prudential regulation and supervision frameworks, and the provision of financial services to difficult clienteles (small farmers, rural and urban microenterprises, the poor, women) in developing countries. This reputation has resulted from four decades of distinguished research, publications, instruction, technical assistance, and information dissemination.

The program established in the early 1960s and housed in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics Department at OSU has trained some of the leading professionals in the rural and microfinance industry. The program offers a solid formation for those looking to obtain a Master or Ph.D. degree in the area of development economics.

The OSU program has conducted research in different parts of the developing world such as:

  • Africa (The Gambia, Mozambique, Niger, Uganda, Swaziland, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Madagascar, Mali, Benin, South Africa and Egypt).
  • Asia (Bangladesh, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and India)
  • East Europe (Russia, Ukraine and Romania) and
  • Latin America (Brazil, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Bolivia, El Salvador, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru and Mexico).

Recent research and technical assistance activities have focused on the relationship between, on the one hand, deposit mobilization and lending technologies and, on the other, the inclusion or exclusion of specific client types in microfinance loan portfolios. The program has examined the levels and sources of the costs of rural financial intermediation as well as the role of learning in addressing imperfect information and in reducing transaction costs.

The program created the Devfinance email discussion list with close to 1000 subscribing researchers and practitioners from all over the world. The web link below goes to the home page of the Rural Finance Program where a list of publications and further information about the program can be found.
