Terrafina is a joint microfinance initiative of ICCO, Oikocredit and Rabobank Foundation, set up in January 2005. Terrafina supports and strengthens local microfinance institutions (MFIs) and their networks in three rural areas in Africa, which are under-serviced in the microfinance sector: the Horn, the Great Lakes and West Africa, as well as on the lower segment of the microfinance market. Its aim is to enlarge the access to integrated financial services in rural areas, to help build young microfinance institutions and to stimulate innovation. The Terrafina initiative tries to combine the strengths of its three partner organisations to maximise service to the MFIs in Africa. ICCO’s capacity-building subsidies and guarantees, Oikocredit’s market-based loans and the Rabobank Foundation’s cooperative grants and loans together provide the kind of support package needed by many MFIs. In this way young MFIs are able to achieve financial sustainability in a period of 5-10 years. Terrafina has started in a limited number of countries (Mali, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Congo-DRC) and plans to expand to 8-11 countries in 2010.
